The key to Comrades glory

Determined to finish the Comrades Marathon.

The Florida Running Club has been focusing on helping their runners fare well at the Comrades Marathon each year.

With experienced runner Laurie Lewis at the helm, the members of the club have been enriched with his knowledge of how to run the endurance race effectively and how to condition themselves to be at the peak of their abilities.

Lewis has also been helping members qualify for the marathon.

“This festive season we took it easy as most of the members are qualified for the Comrades Marathon, some will be qualified by the end of next month,” he said.

The group of runners has been hard at work, looking to experience their first Comrades Marathon or to improve on their previous year’s results.

“We started the training four months already. With about 20 members in the group, we train four days a week. Our aim is to do well at the marathon, not to just finish. This entails planning your race accordingly and this is where I come in,” he said.

Lewis also pointed to carefully choosing a marathon to participate in and not to over-strain oneself by participating in various events.

“I advise the runners to pick two marathons and an ultra-marathon; it’s not advisable to do more. The first 40 kilometres or so of the down run of the Comrades is hard and needs to be approached with caution. The second half will depend on whether you ran the first half with caution and with a plan. The second half when the legs are sore and softened up from the work in the first half is a mental challenge besides the fact that fatigue will start to set in. Have a plan and have respect for the down run,” he said.
