Muscle Riders raced to benefit MDFSA

More than R120 000 raised in aid of muscular dystrophy.

The Muscle Riders, in support of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation (MDFSA), completed the 947 Momentum Cycle Challenge and raised over R120 000 in funds for the organisation.

The Cycle Challenge took place last Sunday 15 November, starting at Riversands Commercial Park. The Record attended MDFSA’s appreciated ceremony at Crossfit Hua at Hoërskool Florida the previous Saturday.

During the ceremony MDFSA handed out the official Muscle Riders T-shirt to all its supporters ahead of the race, 127 in total.

Around 33 000 cyclists participated in the event, which is the second largest race of its kind after the Cape Argus race held in Cape Town annually. South African teenager Stefan de Bod won the men’s race on Sunday, completing the course in a time of 2:15:23. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio won the women’s category in a time of 2:34:01.

MDFSA Gauteng general manager Pieter Joubert said they haven’t finished adding up all the money, as they’ve allotted the rest of November for all the money to come in.

Last year R147 000 was raised, MDFSA fundraiser Braam Roux told the Record.

Joubert, who also has muscular dystrophy, competed in the race as well thanks to a sport wheelchair that was generously donated by CE Mobility. It was adjusted to be fitted to a bicycle. Roux and Pieter van Hoogdalem took turns pulling the wheelchair along the course.

“It was exciting to partake but I felt sorry for the people who had to pull my wheelchair,” Joubert told the Record.

“Together, we conquered the challenge.

“The last two inclines were the toughest to overcome, but it was an incredible feeling to reach the finish line.”

Joubert thanks Roux, Van Hoogdalem, Peter Moffat and Engela van Zyl for their support during the race.

“The medal I received in the end was a lovely gesture, and is something I will treasure for the rest of my life.

“Thank you to the Muscle Riders for your continuous support — we hope to see you all again next year.”

The Muscle Riders will next compete in the Berge en Dale Classic on 6 February 2016. The race is to start at Cradlestone Mall. R10 of every entry fee will be donated to MDFSA.
