Rod Gilly takes on the cycle challenge

For the fifth consecutive year, Rod Gilly finished first in his age category when he participated in last weekend’s Momentum Cycle Challenge.

He finished first among his starting group of 576 cyclists with a time of 2:42.

Riders are seeded into groups based on their previous race performances. The fastest being A seed, descending alphabetically to Z.

With his excellent previous race performances, Gilly was seeded in the top A category of the race at 70-years-old.

“Excessive temperatures and strong winds were major matters affecting riding conditions during the race, in addition to the 5,5 kilometre of severe climbs in the final 8 kilometres of the race,” he said.

Gilly is determined to return again next year to participate in the race and continue to make history by completing another year.

“My race time not only ensured I finish first out of 295 other cyclists in my 65-69 age group, but also fastest in the 59-65 age group where there were 1 152 finishers in the category. My race performance at this year’s race will automatically qualify me to be seeded in category A for the sixth consecutive year when entering the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge next year,” he said.
