RUIMSIG – Several clubs from the Sables Bowling Association compete in the Fred Bekker tournament.

Sables bowling Association (SBA) held the annual Fred Bekker tournament at Florida North Bowling Club on 8 November to open the 2015/2016 season.

Various teams within the Sables district competed in the tournament, including Ruimsig Bowling Club and Honeydew Bowling Club.

“This is an annual tournament on our district calendar and also marks the opening of the Sables Bowling season,” explained Sables Executive Member Graeme Morton.

SBA president Dave Parker welcomed all the players and technical officials and wished them the best of luck ahead of the season.

He also thanked Elize van der Westhuizen and her committee from Florida North Bowling Club for hosting the tournament.

“The format for the days play was Mixed Trips, with each team playing three games of 15 ends on a 4,3,2,1 scoring system. The support from the players that participated was great and it was good to see enough teams to fill two full greens,” explained Morton

He added that the high quality of bowls played proves that the season ahead would be extremely competitive and some very exciting bowls could be expected this season.

At the end of the tournament Parker congratulated Morgan Muvhango from Discovery Bowling Club and Nici Neal from Leases Bowling Club on their selection to the South African team which is going to play at Brisbane in Australia to represent South Africa in the World Bowls Singles Championship.

Rika Lynn, Moira Coombes and SandraViljoen acquired 29 points to win the tournament and were Sables Ladies Selectors while Allan Lyall, Alan Tagg and Mark Beckett were the runners-up and are the Sables Men’s selectors with 24 points.
