Paddlers get in last training

Wright recently started learning to paddle at Florida Lake.

Numerous Gauteng paddlers drove through to the Reitz Water Works to paddle in the 32 kilometre Liebensbergvlei River Race.

“Some raced Saturday in the rain while others chose to race only on Sunday when the sun managed to peek weakly through the clouds. Others, including para-canoeist Constant Olivier raced both days, adding a vital 64kms to the mileage training plan before the Hansa Fish River marathon in October,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

Florida residents Emile Theunissen and Renee Wright finished the second day in a time of 2:25 as the first mixed double combination and 10th overall.

Having passed her river proficiency, she is keen to earn the qualifying river race points for A grade status in order to participate at the Hansa Fish.

Olivier with his partners in the K3, Bertie Baard and Jennie Dallas were the only finishers of both river race days from the local Florida Lake canoe club.

They finished day 1 in 3:5 minutes, and Day 2 in 2:56.

“We are very grateful to those who assisted at the portages where the K3 could not get through and had to carry Olivier and the boat around the obstacle to put in to the river further down,” said Olivier.
