Local para-canoeist makes history

Karima Hare participated in river races as well as the A grade Fish River Marathon in 2013.

Florida Lake Canoe Club para-canoeist Constant Olivier made canoeing history over the Woman’s day long weekend.

He finished the Tugela River Race and became the first para-canoeist to complete the 44 kilometre which is spread over two days.

Michael Lake, Constant Olivier and Andrew Lake did a test run for the para-canoeist in a K3 at Tugela River earlier month to establish his ability, competency and proficiency.

This was to ensure the para-canoeist would be able to manage at the upcoming A Grade Fish River Marathon.

They finished the 44 kilometre race with a time of 4:14.

This resulted in the Canoe South Africa safety officer approving the application for Olivier to participate at the Fish River Marathon in October.

“Florida Lake Canoe Club is proud to have been able to provide the opportunities, training and motivation required to encourage a para-canoeist to fulfill his dreams of adventure and to be the first club in Gauteng to produce a para-canoeist on river races,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

This is not the first time the club has made history.

In 2010 they were the first club in Gauteng to successfully prepare and launch the very first black female river canoeist.
