Wrestlers from the West Rand Wrestling Gymnasium came home with 18 medals

Wrestlers from the West Rand Wrestling Gymnasium came home with 18 medals last month when they participated in the Annual Tuks Open Challenge.

The event was held at the universities Rembrandt Hall and wrestlers from across the country participated in the competition.

Jayden Badenhorst, Sebastian Piek, Daneil Blokdyk, Ruan Welman, Marco Maree en Juan Nel grabbed themselves a gold medal each in their respective categories while Ulrich Buys, Dewald Engelbrecht, Meyer Opperman, Tiaan Classen, Warrick van Helsdingen, Riehan Botha en Ronald Doyle won gold medals.

Rick van der Berg, Ruben Theunissen, Stephan Klopper, Leon van Biljon en David Fourie rounded off the podiums and received bronze medals for their achievements.

“We are proud of our wrestlers especially those who were participating in a big tournament for the first time. They performed well in the Welpie tournament this year and they have backed it up with even better performances,” said the club’s Maryna Welman.

The club’s wrestlers will now be focusing on the upcoming Johny Reits Tournament in Pretoria in August.
