Florida Canoe Club hosts river race

The competition took place in Daleside near the R59 Heidelberg offramp and finished in Meyerton.

Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted a 30km river race last weekend.

This forms part of the canoeists training program and to provide opportunities for new paddlers to gain the experience needed for A grade status to do national events such as the Fish River and Dusi Marathons.

“The weather was superb for a winter highveld day, with gathering swallows, giant kingfishers, and a basking iguana enjoying the spectacle of the canoeists down the river. With low water levels, some of the rapids have become quite shallow and avoiding rocky ledges and other obstacles created some treacherously difficult situations. However, paddlers gained much experience and river knowledge as well as a great deal of enjoyment with the adrenaline and excitement of busy wild water rapids,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

Weltevreden Park Monique Steven, a member of the local Florida Lake canoe club partnered with Jason Brown from Emmarentia Dam to finish the race in third position for the mixed double category and first Sub Veteran team to finish.
