Helderkruin’s Alfred Purchase was the leading star for the Florida Swimming Club when he bagged nine medals at the recent Sasol National Winter Swimming Championship.
His return of six silver medals and three bronze medals is a confidence booster for the young swimmer as he looks to do well at the upcoming Pietermaritzburg Short Courses Swimming Championship.
Teammate Jessica de Beer was not far behind his tally, returning home with four silver medals and three bronze medals for a total of seven medals while Tammy Frylink received one medal.
16-year-old Alfred said he was happy with his performance at the championship and his achievements.
“I love swimming so I’m happy with my performance at the competition. This will serve as a great guideline for future events,” he said.
Swimming coach Tracey Hemphill was proud of her team’s performances and said the competition results was a testament of the hard work they have been doing.
“We have a new programme we are working with called Ultra-short race pace training (USRPT) which is different to conventional methods. It was exciting to see the results from my pupils because they have been working hard. What is great is that we had this amount of success although we were not fully prepared for the competition. This bodes well for the future,” she said.
