Tough road for Poorte U/19

Stefan’s plan is to develop young players in a positive environment so they can represent the senior club in years to come.

It has been a tough season for Roodepoort Rugby Club’s U/19 team this year.

They have struggled to recruit young players into the squad and had to field 17 players in some games during the year.

The team’s head coach Stefan de Koker said he approached high school teams to recruit their players, however, that will be a long term strategy as teams don’t want to increase the workload of their players. “We really battled to find players for the team this season. We have spoken to high schools to recruit their players but that is not something easily done. We want to target the players who have the passion for the sport but might not be playing regularly in their team,” he said.

“The U/19 is an age group where most of the players are in high school or university and are prevented from joining the team. In some cases, they may have had a bad experience with a coach which resulted in them losing interest in the sport. We are not interested poaching their best players,” he said.
