WELTEVREDEN PARK – The Weltevreden Park Tennis Club members hosted their singles championships finals on 4 July.

The Weltevreden Park Tennis Club hosted their singles championships finals on 4 July which has been running since 18 April.

The competition saw enthusiastic members participate in a singles round robin format, which involves playing every person.

At the end of the round robin format, this enabled the club to finalise the top 16 players, who were divided into a top-eight section and the

bottom-eight section.

The top-eight section (main finals) resulted in the quarter-finals and the bottom eight – the plate section.

During the main event – the men’s finals – Ernest Roodt produced arguably his most focused performance in the tournament by beating Yusuf Coovadia 6–3; 6–3 while Donovan Robertson produced a tactical masterclass to defeat Tim Cross 6–4; 6–3 in the men’s plate final.

“It was an amazing day for tennis,” said chairperson of the club Yusuf Coovadia, who also battled it out on the tennis court.

He added, “There was an exciting atmosphere with loads of supporters, family members and people of the community coming out to support their favourite tennis players.

“Ultimately, tennis was the winner and all players involved were also regarded as winners.”

Coovadia expressed his appreciation to all the players and the community for coming out in numbers to make the tournament a success.

“We thank them all for their time and sacrifice for these few months of tennis championships,” he said.

According to him, their main focus now is to develop the youth in the sports.

In August the club will commence its annual doubles club championships.

“We encourage members of the community and the surrounding areas to join the club,” said Coovadia.
