Croquet tournament honours deceased

AUKLAND PARK – Jonathan Paton Memorial Prize will be called the Paton Memorial Trophy in the future.

The Jonathan Paton Memorial Prize was contested on 16 June at The Country Club Johannesburg, Auckland Park, with competitors playing golf croquet. Peter Caroto from Honeydew, along with partner Alastair Lang, won this year’s annual tournament.

Jo Meintjes, five times tournament winner, said the competition would in the future be called Paton Memorial Trophy as Jonathan’s brother, David, recently passed away. David and Jonathan were the children of the prominent author Alan Paton. It was initially set up when Jonathan Paton passed away and is held annually at the The Country Club Johannesburg.

“This is a timed contest lasting no more than 50 minutes. It was also played to handicap which players are assigned and keep track of their wins and losses. The handicap usually lies between players with zero and 10. Zero is the best scratch handicap,” she said.

Maria Watermeyer from Zoo Lake Croquet Club said they were trying very hard to get young people involved in the sport. “It is our pleasure to teach young people this sport,” she said.

Interested players can contact Meintjes and she will direct them to the club nearest to them.
