Goalkeeping programme for youngsters

HONEYDEW – Top goalkeeping coach launches a skills programme for all ages.

Finally, a skills programme for goalkeepers is now available to existing and aspiring players looking to improve their performances between the sticks.

Local resident Gary Avnit is looking to equip youngsters with goalkeeping skills.

With over 20 years of goalkeeping experience both as a player and a coach, Avnit is the driving force behind this specialised training.

The ex-professional soccer player has started a goalkeeping programme called the Gary Goalkeeping Activity which is based at the Eagle Canyon Golf Estate, Honeydew.

Youngsters from as little as eight years to 18 years of age can enjoy learning from the best.

The Jackal Creek resident was previously a keeper in the National Soccer League, now called the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

He has developed a unique form of training and has spent the last four years as head goalkeeping coach at Dainfern Football Club.

“My inspiration came from probably the best goalkeeper SA ever produced, Rocco Smith,” Avnit said, adding that he followed and watched him most of his soccer career.

“My strong belief is that soccer is a trap a ball, look up and pass game,” he said.

Avnit added that his vision is to teach and encourage every player to learn the basics in goalkeeping and soccer. “Goalkeeping is a prime position and my legacy would be to encourage all players to play soccer with a spirit of excellence,” he said.
