Experience pays off for Phillip

The association, which includes 18 clubs in the region made the decision to appoint Phillip last month.

hillip du Randt, head coach at the Witpoortjie Vikings Amateur Boxing Club has been elected as the new public relations officer of the Western Gauteng Open Boxing Association.

“I have decades of experience in boxing and this is why the position was given to me. I am passionate about the sport and want to promote it,” he said.

The 53-year-old has a wealth of experience in the sport. He fought as an amateur boxer from 1967 to 1979. In that period, he participated in 171 matches.

He spent six years as a technical director for the Professional Martial Arts Council before becoming an international judge and referee for Boxing South Africa.

In his new position, Phillip will be procuring sponsorship and funding, he will be responsible for attracting youngsters to the world of boxing.

“My aim is to revive the sport within the community and increase the number of active participants. A few years ago the mines had a few boxing clubs, I will approach them and try to reopen those clubs,” he said.

His own club has seen an increase on members this year. Recently, five new members had their first matches at the Randfontein Boxing Club’s tournament.
