Ruiter wrestlers bring home medals

Patricia and Michael fly South African flag high in Egypt

Ruiter Wrestling Club’s Patricia Theledi and Michael Gaitskill both brought bronze medals from the recent African Continental Championships.

The competition was hosted in Egypt last week. The two wrestlers, who were competing in the junior division, had to achieve first or second position in the South African trials in order to qualify.

They were judged on both Greco and Freestyle.

20-year-old Michael who started wrestling at four-years of age said he is proud of his achievements at the competition and will work hard to get better results in the future.

“It felt good to be competing in Egypt and representing my country. I could have done better,” he said.

18-year-old Patricia started wrestling three years ago after her uncle introduced her to wrestling and she fell in love with the sport.

“I love wrestling because you never know what to expect from your opponent so you have to be aware, you can never underestimate your competition,” she said.

This was Patricia’s first international competition and said she is proud to have claimed the bronze medal.

“In international competitions, it’s another level and you have to step up. Everyone I faced was a lot tougher than I expected,” she said.
