Weltevreden Park resident shows off race skill

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Monique Steven, undoubtedly the top female river racer in the West Rand cruises comfortably through the rapids at the river race opening the season which was hosted by Florida.

The river race season is now in full swing.

Florida Lake Canoe Club recently hosted a 22km river race, which opens the season, and took place from Meyerton to Three rivers.

According to spokesperson for Gauteng Canoe Union, Jennie Dallas, more than 100 paddlers participated in the race.

“Many gained experience on rivers, and earned points towards A grade status to be able to compete in their first A grade river race, the Fish River Marathon in October,” Dallas said.

Weltevreden Park resident and club member, Monique Steven who is also ranked as the club’s top female paddler, showed off her great skills at the race.

“Steven earned a podium position in the K1 single women sub-veteran category at Dusi earlier this year and was nominated top female paddler of the year, and in the club’s history as well,” said Dallas.

Dallas added, “Having taken a break since Dusi, she [Stevens] enjoyed being back on the water surrounded by nature, and finished the race in 00:02:02 as the first single female finisher, as well as the first sub-veteran female.”
