Poorte U/19 too tough for Raiders

The Roodepoort Rugby club’s U/19 team were victorious against the Raiders Rugby Club last night.

The teams were playing at Rand Leases Sports Ground in their first Pirates Grand Challenge fixture of the season.

In the first half, the home side took advantage of the Raiders’ weak defence and scored four tries and Louis Rabie converted two, leaving the score on 24-7.

The second half was terrible for the Raiders as three players had to be carried off the field with injuries.

Poorte took advantage and ran circles around their opponents defence, scoring five tries with Michael Rae converting all of them.

Louis Rabie, Vernon Ngobeni, Andrew Volschenk and Henkie Pretorius each scored two tries with Michael Rae and Dillon Pretorius scoring a try each.

Head coach Stefan de Koker was all smiles watching his players perform well last night and said he is happy with the manner in which his team played.

“I am happy with the result; it proves that the foundation is solid although there are still some facets that clearly need to be improved. We need to work on the player’s communication on the field and improve their support play. Our ball handling and second phase was excellent but the support play was too slow. Our backs and forwards scored tries which im pleased with,” he said.

In the second match of the evening, the Poorte U/21 team took on their Raiders counterparts in their Pirates Grand Challenge fixture. The home team lost 29-5.
