Poorte victorious in first league match

The Roodepoort Rugby Club kicked off their Pirates Grand Challenge campaign in fine fashion as they beat the Raiders Rugby Club 34-10.

Playing at home, Poorte led within the first five minutes with tries from Jesse Geyer and Cliffie Vermaak and the first half came with the score on 23-10. In the second half, the home team piled the pressure onto their visitors which resulted in tries for Gerald Scholtz and Wesley Delport.

Jaco Posthumous scored one conversion and four penalties. The final score was 34-10.

In his assessment of the match, head coach Brian Armitage said his team were dominant in all facets of the game which ensured their victory.

“The Raiders are our neighbours and they a good, tough side but our team was better. The players dominated in the scrums and lineouts, and our solid defence from the start of the game made sure our opponents had few line breaks,” said Brian.

Brian added the victory boded well for the rest of their season.

“This was our first league fixture and the win sets a good tone for our season. The platform has been set and now it’s up to the players to carry on with the momentum,” he said.

Poorte are now preparing to face Alberton Rugby Club in three weeks time.

Tonight, the U/19 and U/21 teams will compete against their Raiders’ counterparts tonight at Rand Leases Sports Ground.

The first match starts at 6pm.
