Sables win Assupol Cup

Best performance after Roodepoort Rugby Club won.

Roodepoort Rugby Club’s second team won the Assupol Interprovincial tournament this weekend.

The team beat University of Johannesburg (UJ) 39-12 at Loftus Versveld.

“Without any doubt that was the best performance from our side in almost two decades. We often give the students a run for their money, but we have not beaten them in at least 15 years,” said team coach Victor Volschenk.

The game for Sables was won by the forwards who dominated the game from start to finish.Their impressive defence denied UJ any try scoring opportunities

“They could not manage to score a single try against us and from the word go, our forwards dominated the game completely. We hit them hard on defence. Overpowered them in the contact. Got numbers to the breakdowns before them,” said Volschenk.

Herman Ley, Pieter Janse van Vuuren, Petrus Wiese, Eric Botes and Jaco Posthumus scored the tries. Posthumus the made four conversions and two penalties. Botes was named man of the match.
