Youngest Spin Master Wicked Wade

13 year old wows with masterclass motorspinning.

A 13-year-old is making veterans in the motorsport of spinning sit up and take notice.

Wade Ray Fourie is the youngest member of Jozi Spin Masters, a Johannesburg crew that promotes motorspinning in the country.

The West Ridge High pupil received his Motorsport South Africa (MSA) license last year to compete legally.

“My dad used to take me to drag races when I was young. I would watch the drivers spinning their cars and it interested me. I would dream of being part of a show where I would spin a car and now I am,”

Wade, or Wicked Wade as he is known in spinning circles, has a passion for cars.

He first got his taste of the limelight when he was one of the headline acts at Spin City Roodepoort in Matholesville.

“After learning how to drive last year, I wanted to take it a step further and spin. My father said as long as I don’t try any funny stuff then it was okay,” said Wade.

In the past, motorspinning was often associated with gangsters but with events sanctioned by the MSA becoming regular, the image of the sport is changing in the country.

“Unlike motor racing, spinning is not dangerous because the car is not at high speeds and with sanctioned events, there are rules and guidelines to follow,” said Wade.

Wade’s reputation in the motosport has been growing and has recently been invited to participate in Namibia.

“I don’t compete to win, I just do it for fun and it’s nice to be recognised for my efforts. Unfortunately due to schoolwork I had to turn down the trip to Namibia,” said Wade.

His father Sebastian was involved in drag racing and motorspinning in the 80’s and is happy that his son is participating in the sport in a safe environment.

“In my day we did spinning illegally. But now with legal shows starting to become regular I have no problem with my son participating. It is one of the safest forms of motorsport because the car is going at around 40 kilometres an hour. This is a way to bond with my son and the rest of the family because we attend events together. My motto is burn rubber and not your soul, so I want Wade to be a role model to his peers and act as an ambassador for the sport of spinning. And to also show the adults that there are legal ways to spin where nobody gets hurt,” said Sebastian.
