Golden Reef Running Club to Surrender Hill

The Golden Reef Running Club will be sending 12 of their athletes to compete in the Surrender Hill Marathon in the Free State this weekend.

The Comrades marathon qualifier is organised by the Bethlehem Marathon klub with three options available to runners, 42.2km, 21.1km and 5km races.

Surrender Hill is a historical site where more than 4000 Boers, under General Marthinus Prinsloo, surrendered to the British during the Anglo-Boer War.

The clubs aces Peder Firman and Jannie Lewies will be at the race to provide their expert advice to the athletes. Lewies has competed at Surrender Hill three times.

Lewies, one of the oldest members of the Golden Reef Club said the marathon is known for its magnificent view of the mountains and is both memorable and breathtaking.

Lewies, who has taken part in 10 Comrades marathons said the Surrender Hill marathon is one of the toughest in the country.

Amanda Greyvenstein is one of the members that will take part in the race in preparation for the Comrades marathon.

“Peder thinks it’s a good idea to take part in the race so I’m better prepared for the comrades this year. I’ve heard its tough but my coach is sly and has not given me much detail about the race itself,” she said.
