King’s athletes perform well

POORTVIEW – The King's School West Rand athletes aim high

The King’s School West Rand has had a very successful athletics season thus far.

Communication officer at the school Bronwyn Barnard said, “We started off our athletics with a inter-house athletics meeting on 16 January and our pupils have been performing great since the beginning of this year.”

She explained that the secret to the athletes performing so well is that they kept on training despite the heat waves.

“A total of 74 athletes participated in the Cluster C Athletics Championships at Ruimsig Stadium on 3 February and after this event they participated in the Roodepoort Championships which took place on 11 February.”

The following athletes performed well in the Roodepoort Championships:

Chloë van der Merwe won gold in the Girls U10 long and high jump.

Chioma Olebuike took gold in the U10 80- and 100m sprints; her sister Oluchi Olebuike took second place and a silver in the U1 80m sprint.

Damieka Hutton took silver in the U11 80m sprint.

The bronze medal athletes were Damieka Hutton who came third in the girls U11 long jump and Chioma Olebuike received bronze for the U10 shot put and Matthew Philips took the third spot in the boys U13 high jump.
