Podium for Florida Canoe Club

Florida Lake Canoe Club does well in race before the Dusi Marathon.

With only two weeks left till the Dusi Marathon, paddlers are fine tuning their skills for the three day race.

Last weekend, 31 January, Florida Lake Canoe Club’s Monique Steven finished third in the Two Day Klip race while Serge van Hee and Richard Daws won the first K2 boat finishers prize.

Steven was one of only seven women who took part in the 72 kilometre race that starts from Buksies Holiday Resort in Kiblerpark, finishing at the Vaal river junction in Three Rivers.

The two-day race is also a seeding training race and river, surf and marathon world champion racer, Hank McGregor also took to the water.
“This provided excellent preparation for the Dusi with massive white water rapids, tricky challenging obstacles, weirs and pipes to shoot through. The race also doubled as the SA K1 Championship Interprovincial, attracting solid competition from other provinces. Prize money was provided by Mitsubishi South and prizes were sponsored by PolyPrint, H20 paddle and boat suppliers in Henley-on-Klip,” said club spokesperson Jennie Dallas.

Steven finished the SA K1 River championships with a time of six hours and 10 minutes and the club’s top paddler Shaun Maphanga unfortunately spent the day searching for his boat, after he lost it during a swim on the first major waterfall rapid.

The Dusi Canoe Marathon will be held on the 19 to 21 February 2015 in Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
