Witpoortjie Bowling Club plans big for 2015

The Witpoortjie Bowling Club is hoping to have a successful 2015

The Witpoortjie Bowling Club is gearing for the New Year and has already set their sights on having a successful year.
With the JBH novice tournament coming up this weekend, members have been hard at work preparing for the event. A week later, the club will be competing in the Super Sevens Bowling tournament.

The club is very excited about the year to come and its president Monica Vandenberg said the club wants to encourage more players to take part in the sport.

“We want more people to join the club and sport because it is very enjoyable. Unlike most sport, it is not very physical and is cheap. It has changed from the olden days when it was strict in its attire and known as old man marbles, now youngsters are what fuel the sport,” she said.

The club has gone so far as to plan visits to local schools with Commonwealth Games triple gold medallist Prince Neluonde and SA Open Singles champion Morgan Muvhango. This is to encourage more youth to take an interest in the sport.
The club already boast almost 40 members, a far cry from the nine they started with just a few years ago.

The club also helps in development of players especially those who are underprivileged but cannot afford to pay club fees and other expenses.
“This is a very social game where people can make friends and enjoy themselves. It’s a more casual sport than it once was. And those who are interested in the sport or have the skill to play but do not have the money are helped by our club,” said Vandenberg.

This year, the club is also planning its Jolly Jack Business league where businesses can compete against each other. The night league is another competition which the club will host although it will be more of a social competition.
