Two wrestling rookies from Roodepoort won the APWA tag team championship

Two wrestlers from Roodepoort are the youngest African Punishment Wrestling Association (APWA) tag team champions.

The 21-year-old Flying Dutchman from Discovery and 17-year-old Ultimate Nathan from Weltevreden Park won the championship after taking part in the Ladder Match Event on 16 December.

The partners under the name “Team Rainbow Nation” answered the open call challenge of current champions 2 Face and Dirty Jackson at the beginning of the Ladder Match Event.

The rookies, who started wrestling just last year, started the match on a high but the experience of the defending champions made the match one sided. However, just when the match was but a foregone conclusion, Ultimate Nathan dodged Dirty Jackson’s finishing move in the last minute and the super kick landed in his partner’s face instead.

Not only did Ultimate Nathan pin down his opponent for the three count, but the Flying Dutchman and their manager joined in to ensure the win.

The partners started off as rivals, facing each other twice before deciding to partner up.

“We did not really like each other very much and we quickly became rivals, we fought twice with one win each. But we soon saw an opportunity and decided to partner up. We are rookies in the industry and we wanted to prove ourselves,” they said.

The partners have been dreaming of becoming wrestlers since a young age and want to inspire the youth of the country

“Wrestling is entertainment and we like to do that. Putting our bodies on the line is hard work and we have to train to be at this level. There is nothing fake about the sport because all the moves we do are dangerous. We are the next generation in the sport and we want to inspire other youngsters in the country,” they said.
