Gymnastics club makes its mark in 2014

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Prinz says that gymnastics club performed extremely well in 2014 in the various competitions.

Visions Gymnastics have been around for the last couple of years but Linda Prinz from the club in Weltevreden Park believes 2014 was a very successful year.

“Earlier this year, our students performed extremely well at the African Championships and we finished in the top three at the National Championships that took place in Klerksdorp,.” Prinz stated.

The club performed at above expectation when six of their students were crowned as national champs at the North Zone Challenge in June. “The Level 4–6 gymnasts competed in the Gym Games in Cape Town after that and nine of our students were national champs and five ended up in the top three.”

She explained that one of this year’s top woman’s gymnasts are Bianca Mann who was selected to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships. “Mann held her own with the other competitors and she represented the club with an excellent attitude.”

Muhammad Khaalid Mia also made his mark this year when he was selected to present SA at the Youth Olympics. “He was bestowed the great honour to be the flag bearer for the South African team.”

Prinz added that a total of seven gymnasts were selected to represent the South African Gymnastic Federation (SAGF) at the Zone 6 Challenge in Namibia at the end of the year and two more gymnasts were selected to represent the SAGF in Serbia, also at the end of the year.

Head coach Derick Scholtz said, “We are very proud of these gymnasts. They train many hours, more than 24 hours per week.”

Prinz said, “Without the hard work of our coaches we won’t be able to perform that well. And two of our coaches – Maxwell Dube and Derick Scholtz – received the Coach of the Year award at the Central Gauteng Gymnastics Association prize-giving.”

Some of the students that received awards were Muhammad Khaalid Mia who received the award for the Gymnast of the Year and Lize Slabbert received an award for the highest mark on an apparatus when she scored a perfect 10 for her vault.

“Thanks for every coach and gymnast that worked very hard to make 2014 a very successful year for Visions Gymnastics,” concluded Prinz.
