Defending champs UP-Tuks on top

UP-Tuks started their Varsity Football campaign on the right foot beating UFS in a close match.

UP-Tuks beat UFS 1-0 in Pretoria on Monday night to secure a winning start to their Varsity Football campaign.

UP-Tuks won the tournament last year after beating NMMU 4-1 in the final game.

There were few opportunities early on in the match for either team to score. UP-Tuks managed to get the ball into the UFS box on a few occasions, but poor finishing prevented them from taking the lead in the first half.

Kovsies scoring opportunities came from a few set pieces, but they could not capitalise on their chances either.

Despite increased pressure from both teams late in the first half, the score remained goalless at half time.

UP-Tuks played a much more attacking orientated style of football in the second half. Their efforts were rewarded through a goal from Lucky Mathosi who headed a fine cross from Richard Moremi into the back of the net.

Despite chances for UFS to score the equaliser late on, the UP-Tuks defence remained resolute to keep the score 1-0.

The night’s other fixtures, which included NMMU v NWU, UWC v UJ, and UCT v Limpopo, all ended in draws. UP-Tuks now top the Varsity Football log with three points.
