The Free State was the first team to book their place in the semi-finals of the SAB League National Championship after the final four slots were decided on Thursday at a packed Montshiwa Stadium in Mafikeng.
The largest grassroots football development tournament continued to see some exciting action unravel as the Free State qualified for the last four with a 3-1 penalty victory over USSA Football.
Reigning champions Western Cape also needed the lottery of penalty shoot-outs. They needed some late goals to come back from two goals down and force a 2-2 draw.
Gordon Witbooi’s men eventually prevailed with a 7-6 win in the shoot-out.
KwaZulu-Natal were next up and they beat tournament favourites, Northern Cape, 1-0 to become the third team to reach the next stage.
The Gauteng side eventually bowed out of the competition as they lost 5-2 to a rampant North West outfit.
Action will resume on Friday, 18 July at the Montshiwa Stadium where the final teams will face off against each other in hope of booking their place into the final.
