Mashego – The strikers have to step up

Sundowns striker vows to score regularly for his side next season.

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego has vowed to score regularly for his side next season after missing out on the Absa Premiership top goalscorer award during the last campaign.

The former Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows player won the award during the 2012/13 campaign after scoring 13 goals for the Dube Birds, one more than Kaizer Chiefs’ Bernard Parker.

However, he was unable to defend it last season as he could only manage seven goals due to a groin injury keeping him out of the final 14 matches of the season as the Brazilians went on to clinch the league title.

“Last season I could only watch anxiously as my team-mates brought home the championship,” Mashego told Sapa. “I think this season the strikers will have to step up.

“I will give it my all and do my best help us defend our title. As a striker my job is to score the goals and I plan to score as many as possible.”

Last season Parker was able to finally claim the top goalscorer award, finished as the league’s top scorer with ten goals.
