Gauche leads South Africans at Amateur Championship

Youngster to lead strong South African contingent.

Teagan Gauch heads a 10-man strong South African contingent after the first round of the weather-interrupted Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush and nearby Portstewart in Northern Ireland.

The 21-year-old Tuks HPC student carded four birdies for an opening two-under-par 69 to finish within range of first round leader, Daniel Brown.

Brown leads the pack with a four-under-par 66 at Royal Portrush, while his compatriot Ryan Evens and Scotland’s Liam Johnston carded 68s to hit the front at Portstewart Golf Club.

Zander Lombard, NJ Arnoldi and James du Preez are the next best placed South Africans.

Lombard started with an eagle on the second and a birdie on the third, but back-to-back bogeys at the eighth and ninth saw him drop to one-under-par 69.

Arnoldi closed with a three-over-par 74 at Portstewart while Du Preez from Pretoria carded a 73.
