Ekurhuleni to host community games

Masakhane Community Games coming to the East Rand this weekend.

Ekurhuleni will host the third annual Masakhane Community Games at the Germiston Stadium, on Saturday.

Mandlakazi Mpahlwa-Sigcawu, who is the spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, says the games are a community-based programme focused on building social cohesion and increasing interest in sports.

The event will also form part of the various activities that have been planned to coincide with the Youth Month (June).

“The programme also seeks to promote healthy living, curb obesity, and reduce the high rate of pregnancy and drug abuse amongst young people in Ekurhuleni,” he said.

The event is open to anyone from Ekurhuleni who is 15-years and older may join a team in their customer care area.

The sporting codes will include aerobics, soccer, five-a-side soccer, basketball, cricket, netball, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, karate, boxing, chess as well as a 4km fun walk and 8km run.

The top performers will be roped into the Ekurhuleni Sports Academy, which is made up of the top athletes from the area who are then trained with the aim of representing the municipality in competitive sport tournaments.

These athletes also get opportunities to be selected for provincial and national sports teams.
