Gatland: We are not here to make up the numbers

“My target for this tour is to win.”

Wales international rugby coach Warren Gatland insists that his side are not in South Africa just to make up the numbers and are planning on winning the two game series against the Springboks.

“We need to start well and get some confidence and hopefully we can win. A couple of years ago in Australia we were very unlucky, we were close to South Africa in the autumn and we are not here to make up the numbers,” said Gatland.

“We are here to build, get some confidence and hopefully to win the series.

“My target for this tour is to win.”

When Gatland was first here as the Welsh national team coach in 2008 his side suffered a 2-0 whitewash, but that is something he puts down to inexperience and is looking to avoid defeat this time round.

“I had only just been in charge when we were here in 2008,” added Gatland.

“We were well beaten in the first Test and came back and were unlucky in the second Test. We were in front and had a couple of rough calls go against us in the second Test.”

Wales will face South Africa in their first test on Saturday, June14, in Durban before travelling to Nelspruit for the second test on June 21.
