Streamlining sport in Roodepoort

Once each ward has a committee, the RSC plans on representing Johannesburg on a larger scale.

A meeting at the Roodepoort Civic Centre on Friday afternoon (30 May) solidified the recent call for action amongst sports people.

17 wards between Roodepoort and Johannesburg are coming together to form the Region C Local Sports Council (RLSC) or what they’d prefer to call the Roodepoort Sports Council (RSC), resident Aubrey Thomas said. Significant voices in local sport, including Junior Ramovha (Johannesburg Sports Council), Theo van Rensburg and Mackie Venter, that is organising the Youth Games on 4 July this year, attended. Roodepoort’s council will be affiliated with the Johannesburg council.

“We want to streamline sport in Johannesburg,” said Junior Ramovha.

“We need to work on developing young talent from the bottom of the system upwards… we need to develop them from the junior competitors in our schools and clubs to the next Olympic or world champions.”

Ramovha emphasised the JSC’s mission to make Johannesburg a world-class African sport city of choice, much like the City’s general slogan. For this to happen, he said, each of the wards are to create their own sports committee. He said that every club or federation is to function as normal without interruption from the committees, but that the committees will serve as their representation to escalate issues to government. With his presentation, Ramovha emphasised what the RSC will focus on; good local governance, sports representation, growing sport and services.

The next step, he said, is to create the committees and organise a database of every member of any club or sports organisation in order to ease organising sporting events in Region C.

“Ideally, Region C will stand out among the regions of Johannesburg, we will have our own events and be organised enough that every player or athlete will have the opportunity to compete locally, nationally and internationally,” Thomas said.
