Soccer star jets off to Rome

RUIMSIG - Rising soccer star to represent South Africa at the VW Junior Masters tournament in Italy.

Andreas Lambiris (11) is one of 16 team players who will represent South Africa in the VW Junior Masters soccer tournament which will be held in Rome, Italy in May.

“We started off as 70 players, and then it went to 50 players, 30 and the final 16 players,” the Ruimsig resident said, commenting on the trials which were held last year in Soweto. Fourteen local teams competed and the best players were selected to form one team, and this team will represent South Africa in Italy. South Africa is one of 25 countries competing.

Lambiris explained that although he does believe in himself, he did have his doubts whether or not he would qualify. “I was playing with people who were a year older and that was a bit of challenge for me.”

He began playing soccer at the tender age of four and currently plays for the U12 team at Panorama Football Club. Last year he was named the best U11 player at the club.
