Leases Bowling Club on the roll in Sables competition.

The Sables Super Five’s bowling competitions took place on Sunday 1 December at the Leases Bowling Club in Tornado Park, Roodepoort.

The day, which was sponsored by Perfect Delivery, saw four teams consisting of five players each coming from within the Sables District. The teams had been competing for three consecutive Sundays to try and win their respective sections and then win in the last eight play-offs to proceed to the semifinals.

The four teams were from the Discovery, Leases and Witpoortjie Bowling Clubs.

During the semifinals the two teams of the Discovery Bowling Club, Discovery One and Two, participated against each other while Leases Bowling Club was drawn against Witpoortjie Bowling Club.

According to Dave Parker, president of the Sables Bowling Association, the standard of the bowls played was exceptional.

At the mid-morning tea break Discovery One managed to win their trips game and peeled their pairs game.

Leases on the other hand got off to a flyer and managed to win their trips and pairs games.

After tea the players returned to their rinks for the singles and four’s matches.

Gaylyn Bedford-Owen from Discovery One had a very tough game against Morgan Muvhango from Discovery Two and held on to win her singles game 21 to 20.

Mike Marnewick from Leases was put under some pressure from Gavin Crocket from Witpoortjie, but also held on and won the game 21 to 13.

In the four’s match-ups, Discovery One beat Discover Two, and Leases beat Witpoortjie, leaving Leases undefeated in the morning session.

This meant that Discovery One would meet with Leases in the final after winning their semifinal seven to one against Discovery Two and Leases overcoming Witpoortjie by eight against zero.

In the final of the trips, the Leases team picked up one shot to beat Discovery One in the final.

At the afternoon tea break, Leases were leading with four to zero in the final against Discovery One, and Witpoortjie and Discovery Two were level on two points each in the third and fourth place play-off.

Gaylyn again faced some tough opposition in Mike in the final of the singles but still won the game 21-14.

Leases Bowling Club was crowned champions of the 2013 Sables Super Fives’ Competition after beating Discovery One by six to two in the finals.

Finishing in fourth place were Discovery Two after losing to Witpoortjie on shot aggregate and landing them the third place.

Parker thanked all the players, Leases Bowling Club and Werner Blucher, the Sables Technical Officials and all other members involved, especially Perfect Delivery for their sponsorship and assistance throughout the tournament.
