New West Rand junior squash stars named

Florida, Krugersdorp High and Cliffview walk away as victors.

At least three junior squash champions were crowned in their respective age groups after a number of players from nine schools went head to head during the West Rand Junior Squash School’s Tournament held early in October.

In the U/19 category, Siobhan Hawyes from Krugersdorp High School beat Alex Budnitsky from Northcliff High School by three sets to two. This year’s U/16 champion is none other than local boy, Brendon Willemse from Hoërskool Florida, who was too good for Kyle Hawyes from Constantia Kloof Primary School (CKPS), winning the match convincingly by three sets to none.

Demi Galanakis from Cliffview Primary School ensured that the girls stayed on top in a mixed final when she beat Cameron Nagel from Hoërskool Monument by three sets to two for the U/14 trophy.

Steve Hawyes, part owner of the Western Rackets Squash Centre lauded the youngsters for having entertained the crowd and giving it their best on the courts.

“This once again showed that teenagers enjoy the game. It was nice to see so many of them playing the game with so much enthusiasm.

“Although winning is always the ultimate aim, it is important to see the bigger picture and that is to have fun. It gives children an alternative to getting involved in a healthy lifestyle, and to keep them away from nonsense.

“Maragon had the most entrants with 11”.

Those juniors interested in practicing at the centre can do so every Monday and Friday evenings.
