Morningside defends Leases Classic bowling crown

Bowling unit from Jozi successfully defends Leases Classic crown.

The bowling unit of four men from Morningside in Johannesburg successfully managed to defend their Leases Classic title in Georginia over the long weekend.

As always the Leases Classic proved to be one of the biggest events on the bowling calendar as teams as far as Linden, Morningside and Jeppe, as well as the local players made their way to the greens for the tournament.

Besides the 12 teams present at the tournament, the event also welcomed four Protea bowlers namely Susan Nel, Esmé Steyn, Nicci Neal and Nick Rusling, which many believe gave the tournament that little bit extra.

Going into the last session on Sunday afternoon it was so close that all teams was in it to win it.

The Morningside team captained by Richard Haupt showed that they had nerves of steel and held on to beat Nick Rusling and his mixed team from Discovery/ Leases by just two points in the final.

Alec Nel and his mixed team from Rustenburg Impala/ Discovery eventually claimed third place by shot aggregate against Steve Maritz and his team members from the Italian club (affiliated to the Johannesburg Bowling Association).

President of Leases Bowling Club, Tom Stones said at a post-match presentation, “The format of play for the tournament made each game’s result vital to the overall placings. The competition amongst the players was very keen, which made for some excellent bowls.

“Without sponsors, tournaments like this could not happen. A big thank you to all the sponsors, as well as the players.”

With the year 2014 being the 30th year of the Leases Classic, vice-president of Sables, David Parker said, “Plans are already under way to make it a memorable occasion. Well done to Leases on a successful tournament, hope to see you all in 2014.”
