Poorte’s long winning streak comes to an end against Brakpan

Valke champs again too good for Lions champs.

The impressive streak of 11 wins on the trot has come to an end for the Roodepoort Rugby Club first team after Brakpan got the better of them this past weekend.

Brakpan, the Valke champions again were too good for the Golden Lions champs with an impressive and rather easy 37-20 victory on home soil on Saturday 3 August.

Roodepoort has lost to the East Randers for a third consecutive time. This follows a 39-29 loss in July of 2012 and a disappointing 39-13 defeat that forced Roodepoort’s exit from this year’s Community Cup in George.

So it is fair to say that all good things have come to an end for the number-one team in the Predator League, but it was not such a hard day for the other Poorte teams at the Brakpan office as Roodepoort’s second team (Sables) clinched a comfortable 38-24 victory, and so did the third team (26-19) and U/19s (31-24). The only other Roodepoort team to join the first team on the losing side was the U/21s who were hammered 73-0.

Pieter Visser of the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) also confirmed this week that Sables is the only Roodepoort team to have qualified for the Predator League Cup semi finals.

They take on the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on Saturday 17 August away from home.

Despite the loss to Brakpan yet again, the Roodepoort first team can look back at a very successful 2013 season.

Not only did the first team secure the Golden Lions trophy that included wins over some big names such as UJ, Wits, Pirates and Raiders, but they already have qualified for the 2014 Community Cup for the second consecutive year.
