Two rugby giants ready to square off in an epic World Cup final

Will South Africa win the William Webb Ellis Trophy for a record fourth time when we face our New Zealand rivals?

This year’s Rugby World Cup has been a wild rollercoaster ride for many a Springbok fan, with questionable on-field calls, confusing team selections and quite a few tight results.

The past two weeks’ games against France and England had South Africans pulling their hair out, biting their nails until it bled, and yelling their throats hoarse as they motivated the players to give a little bit more. It seems to have worked as we cleared both the final two hurdles and will be playing for ultimate glory this Saturday (October 28).

To be honest, I am still a bit shell-shocked, and my heart has not recovered completely, but the fact that we will be facing our biggest rugby rivals for the first time in a World Cup final since 1995, is slowly starting to sink in. The excitement and belief in the team is also growing and the more I think about it, the more excited I get, with my only remark being, ‘this is going to be epic!’.

The memory of that historical final 28 years ago is etched in many of our memories; the date, the time, the palpable excitement, and the utter joy after Joel Stransky’s winning drop goal. I was still a teenager when this final was played, and all these years later I still get goosebumps when I talk about the game.

Now we stand on the threshold of not only possibly becoming the second nation to win the William Webb Ellis Trophy in back-to-back tournaments but we are also on the brink of making history as the first nation to win the cup for a record fourth time!

So, for the last time in this World Cup, let’s don our green and gold, light the fire, sing Shozoloza, and throw our full support behind our boys when they take their places on the field to play their hearts out for the final 80 minutes to ultimate glory!
