We need more laughter in our lives

The experts say that laughter is the best medicine; something I believe we need more of.

We have just passed the one-year anniversary of the arrival of Covid-19 in South Africa, and even though (on the surface) it might look as if we are handling it well, I believe we are struggling.

I have read recently that The World Happiness report found that South Africans were not doing so well after all. The report ranks countries according to the happiness of their residents, and out of 149 countries South Africa was ranked 103rd.

This ranking might not look so bad, but if you think about it, it is also not that good. It is said in the report that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a global spike in sadness, worry and anger, and I am sure that you can add depression and anxiety too.

So, what can we do to feel a bit better? Maybe the question should be, is there anything that will help us feel a little less sad? My answer is yes, there is.

The experts say that laughter is the best medicine. It might not solve all our problems or make our worries and anxiety disappear, but it might just help to make us feel better – even if it is just for a little while.

To try lightening your mood and making you worry a little less, I want to share the following funnies I found on the internet:

• A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion.
• A rubber band pistol was confiscated from algebra class because it was a weapon of math disruption.
• The butcher backed into the meat grinder and got a little behind in his work.
• No matter how much you push the envelope, it’ll still be stationery.
• A dog gave birth to puppies near the road and was cited for littering.
• Two silk worms had a race and ended up in a tie.
• When cannibals ate a missionary, they got a taste of religion.
• Don’t join dangerous cults; practice safe sects.

Until next week, look out for each other, stay safe and laugh more often …
