Promoting a sense of community

From the desk of the editor

Scrolling through the various news sites, I can’t help noticing that we are bombarded with a lot of negative news on a daily basis, making it seem that there is not much good news around to share.

I prefer reading (mainly) about sport, but I do love a ‘fluffy’ feel-good story as well. Don’t get me wrong, I am not blind to the other things going on in our beautiful country, and ensure that I stay up to date with the harder, less happy news as well, but, given a choice, I would rather read more about what I like.

This made me think about you, our loyal readers and community members, because, after all, we, as a community newspaper, are here to ensure you are kept in the loop with the happenings in your community. On a daily basis the journalists try very hard to ensure you are able to read about what is happening in your area, ranging from crime, school news, sports news, municipal news as well as any other general snippets. And, it is with you, loyal reader, in mind, that they sit in front of their computer screens, typing away on their keyboards, to make sure the most interesting angle is used to produce an article that will not only add value to your life, but also show our love for the community.

It is a fact that there are many community members in our midst with exciting and interesting stories to tell, but, we do not always know about them. That is why I want to use this opportunity to invite our readers to contact us and allow us to tell your stories. I also want to extend this invitation to our readers to share your thoughts and suggestions with us, tell us what you want to read more of – more crime-related articles, more general articles with the focus on community members, more school news, or maybe more about the municipal issues in your area? Maybe some would like to use our letters platform to share their concerns or thank someone who helped them in a time of need.

Help us to tell our community’s stories by sending me an email at roodepoortrecord@caxton.co.za/ northside@caxton.co.za.

Until next week, stay safe and look out for each other …
