Showing virtual support for women

From the desk of the editor

Once a year, women (and men) have the opportunity to come together and make a difference by running, jogging or walking for a good cause in the annual SPAR Women’s Race.

This race usually sees thousands of women of all ages and fitness levels come together at Emmarentia Dam and braving a 5km or 10km route to show support to victims of gender-based violence, and help to raise awareness for breast cancer.

This year, because of the global Covid-19 pandemic, the race initially was cancelled, but, the organisers had a great idea and decided to change the race to a virtual one. Entry fees were used to put together food parcels for those hit hardest by the after-effects of the pandemic, and participants also had the opportunity to show they care by donating to a charity of their choice.

The entries were capped at 30 000, and to the delight of the organisers, they were snatched up within a few days, showing that, even though the race looked different this year, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants, including mine.

So, on Saturday, 26 September, I, together with family, donned my SPAR shirt, put on my mask and ventured out to complete my annual SPAR run. Our 5km route was quite a tough one, and we really had to work hard to complete it. But, as the sweat ran down my face, I kept telling myself that by doing this, I am being part of a group of people helping to make a difference, even though it might seem small.

It warmed my heart to see all the supporters of this event on the road, all uniting to show support for one cause, making me realise that, even though we are not allowed to be together, we can still make a difference while apart.

So, next time you think you cannot make a difference, just remember the following anonymous quote, “Never get tired of doing little things for others. Sometimes, those little things occupy the biggest part of their hearts.”

Until next week, stay safe and look out for each other …
