‘I am so happy to be back at the gym!’

From the desk of the editor

My first week back at the fitness studio I train at after almost six months of online training at home, was one of the best feelings I have experienced in quite a while! (And, no I am not joking!)

And, yes, I have been training diligently, on my own, at home, using the videos posted on our online platform by our great instructors, but, to be honest, it was not the same. There is something different about being back at the gym, training with a group of people who are going through the same as you, than at home with only the dogs and cat watching you.

I was worried about quite a few things before returning to the studio, one of them being the requirement of having to wear a mask for the duration of the exercise class, which of course led to my big research project and mission to find the perfect one that would help me shine on the training floor, rather than lying on my back, passed out, because I could not breathe.

So, I received these highly recommended masks the morning before my first spinning class, and boy was I excited to try one out! The mask looked exactly the way they described it, and, even though I had a few reservations, I mustered all my courage to put it on and boldly entered the class. Big was my surprise, when, about 20 minutes into the class, I was still sitting on the bike (not lying next to it), being able to breathe quite comfortably and enjoying my session.

But, I was still a little sceptical, as I still had a cardio kickboxing class the next night, which I believed would be the ultimate test of my newly acquired accessory, because it would not only have to pass my expectations, but also those of my 18-year-old daughter who trains with me. And, after almost an hour of hopping, skipping, jumping (and burpees!) the mask passed with flying colours!

In fact, it was so comfortable, that I only realised halfway home, that I have not taken it off yet! An incident which led me to believe that yes, my new training mask does indeed, make me feel (and look, sort off) like a superhero.

Until next week, stay safe and look out for each other …
