Someone should take initiative

Rhonda from Roodepoort writes:

With regard to the recent letters in the Roodepoort Northsider from older people looking to be given job opportunities.

I am in agreement with Zenith’s letter in the 13 July 2018 issue and would also like to appeal to someone with influence to give a voice to the many mature citizens and come up with a plan to create job opportunities for over 50s.

There is so much experience and skill to be found in this age category that can be of great benefit to companies and our country.

I also find it strange that the CEOs, CFOs and MDs of these very companies that refuse to employ mature citizens are over 60 and even 70 and yet they are able to hold such esteemed positions. Why should it be any different for ordinary staff who are willing to work to support their families. What’s there to lose?

Looking for work like Zenith says is so difficult because they look at your DOB and decide you are old and cannot work. It’s all in the mind and a mindset fed to society. What is old??? Is it the way you look, talk or behave???

People are often in disbelief when you tell them your age. I often get “you don’t look your age” or even that you sound like a young person on the phone. Recently a trip to Home Affairs to apply for a ID card also had the staff saying “you don’t look your age”. Many over 50s are still strong, efficient, responsible and most of all intelligent. So why the discrimination?

Many people in their 70s are still leading productive lives and contributing to society.

Can we all unite and help the plight of “Jobs for over 50s”.
