Why is it not a criminal offence?

Please can someone explain why child abuse is a criminal offence which carries a criminal record and jail time, yet animal abuse just results in a fine, even in a worst case scenario?

Animals, like children, are speechless and helpless. They also never asked to be here, yet it’s nothing if a human harms an animal. If you knock a child over, its a big thing, yet knock an animal over and its a case of ‘oh oops’ … NO NO NO.

How many animals have rescued and helped humans yet get treated like nothing? If it were not for service dogs and guide dogs etc., what would happen to the people that use them? Animals are good enough to fight in wars, search for criminals, sniff out missing people and drugs, yet they don’t have the right to be protected from evil humans.

I say animal abuse should be a criminal offence, just like child abuse.
