Harsher fines should be enforced

Disgusted senior citizen from Witpoortjie Retirement Village writes:

Firecrackers caused us absolute hell at New Year, with brain-dead and ungodly inhumane imbeciles letting off fire bombs.

There were no beautiful firework displays as we had in past years that just fizzled out in the night sky and only lasted a few minutes after midnight, which is the reason to welcome in the new year. Five minutes thereafter the new year is no longer new.

These hooligans and thugs showed no shame at breaking municipal laws about the rights of residents and suburban domestic and other animals re illegal noise and disturbances, causing absolute terror in local animals. The bylaws also state that the improper use of fireworks is illegal; that no fireworks can be discharged within 500m of a retirement home, and permission must be sought to set off crackers in a private yard.

We had a few of these lawless citizens in Hendrik Boom and Proot Streets who showed absolutely no concern or feelings for the havoc they caused to the elderly, pets and wildlife such as birds. They had no shame in terrorising us. Their reign of terror negatively affected our large pet population when they indiscriminately and illegally ignited noisy fire bombs well into the evening.

Mayor Mashaba should enforce the fines as laid down in the law to reduce the panic levels among the elderly and animals in our immediate suburb to produce a safer environment for all law-abiding and decent citizens as well as pets and wildlife.
