The hawkers are not the only ones to blame

Elza Wilson from Witpoortjie writes:

Dear Dr Maeko

I live opposite you, also next to Princess Primary School for the past 18 years.

This principal is not only scared of the hawkers, I think there are lots of other things too. Yes, the streets are a total mess every afternoon after school, but it’s not only because of the hawkers, it’s because the children are not trained in rubbish-bin use. Lots of them also are on the streets for longer than a hour after school has finished awaiting transport, but have you ever seen the condition of the playgrounds next to Vredenhoek Park (playground fenced in on lend from Joburg Parks)?

It has not been cleaned up for at least three years. After many phone calls and emails it is still a disgusting place for school children to play. The dry leaves from the last three winters and mice find this a comfy home with lots of food from lunch boxes.

So you see, no ‘luck’ for you or me or whoever else might find this a problem. Maybe the Department of Education should be called in.
