Clear our cluttered streets

A few weeks ago, I read an article in the Roodepoort Record regarding an extension for political parties to remove their election posters [from poles along the sidewalks, and other places].

In the days that followed, I became more aware of all the trailer adverts littering our neighbourhoods and thought back a few years to the outcry over the relatively tiny estate agent ‘On show’ boards. By-laws for the City of Johannesburg and the City of Tshwane clearly state all trailer advertising is prohibited and yet there are companies whose sole business model is to actively pursue this illegal avenue, seemingly unpoliced by the JMPD.

At the end of the day it is not even these companies that become associated with the illegal activity but the advertisers that they mislead. Upon taking a closer look at these trailers I noticed that many of them are unlicensed (or are simply not displaying their licence disks or licence plates) and have no brake or indicator lights either.

The companies operating these trailers seem to feel that removing the wheels or tow hitch to prevent the JMPD from towing them away makes the practice acceptable. I hope to see the JMPD as vigilant as they were in dealing with the estate agents boards when clearing this current clutter from our streets.
