I am really disappointed in our community.

Last night a neighbour of ours was burgled, she was stripped of her car and her personal belongings. What seemed like a normal evening, my husband and I were having a conversation in the kitchen until we heard a woman speaking really load but her voice sounded as if something was wrong, I then opened the kitchen door and all I could hear was someone saying “did you see my car, did you see my car”. Immediately I said to my husband that something is wrong, someone either got hijacked, but something did not sound right.

We then went outside and only too see a women, standing with a security guard from ADT in complete distress, crying hysterically and kept asking did you see my car. I immediately went inside to fetch a glass of sugar water to help her calm down as she was really in a state if distress. She was then uttering she needs to call her mother and unfortunately they have taken her bag with all her belongings including her cell phone.

My husband then managed to get her to tell him what is her mother’ s number and he called her stating what happened and that she needs to come. In the meantime our next door neighbour came out, took our numbers, got into to his car and circulated the area. Now what really saddens me, is that none of the surrounding neighbours came out to help her, and don’t tell me that no one heard how distressed she was because, everyone was rather peeping through their windows instead of actually offering even a glass of water.

I am really disgusted in people, because in times like this the only people that could help you are the people around you which are your neighbours! I feel that even if you don’t know the next person’s name, in a time of trauma/ crisis or even need one should be able to offer some sort of help even if it is a glass of water with support. I feel that if the roles were reversed and you were in that situation, trust me all you need is support in that time, just your presence means a lot. I am told that this is just the way society is today, that people are too scared to come out of their houses to help the next person. I say bullshit!

Why should we be scared of these criminals that comes into our homes, invade our privacy, and take what we work hard for. If we could all stand together as a community this would and should not be happening. Let’s face reality, these criminals are the minority and we are the majority. If we could just stand together as one, and show these intruders that we mean business, but clearly this would not happen and everybody should just go back into their homes and lock themselves up as if they are in their own made prison.
