With the recent spate of home invasions in the Wilro Park area, I believe it is time to review some lesser known security tips that can prevent you from becoming a victim of the crime and violence which is plaguing our country.

1.) When approaching your driveway, scan the surroundings for items that were not there, or have been moved in your absence. ie. Dustbins or anything that could be used to scale your perimeter walls. If criminals have already gained access to your home, there will usually be a lookout with a cellphone stationed outside.

2.) Most wooden front doors have a steel security door on the outside. If possible, always unlock the the wooden door first. This will enable you to check the interior while there is still a barrier between you and any criminal awaiting your return. Be aware of anything that seems out of place when entering your home ie. Grass or leaves on floors, or strange odours such as cigarette smoke or perspiration.

3.) Do not leave tools or spare keys lying around inside the home. The point of entry of burglars is usually small, and they cannot remove large appliances and valuables if the doors are secured.

4.) Always keep access gates locked, and ensure your domestic worker or employees are security conscious. Do not allow them to admit anyone without your permission. It takes just 2 seconds for someone to slip through a gate and ruin your life forever.

5.) When in a public place such as a restaurant or pub, be aware if a group of men enter and then separate. Robbers will take up station at doors and windows to prevent clients leaving, and to watch for security. A “spotter” will usually also enter the establishment to check security, and then leave to summon his cronies.

Unfortunately, most people only become streetwise after a crime incident. Your best defence is alertness and common sense, and do not take anything for granted. Let’s make it as difficult as possible for criminals in our community.
